Head of Construction Business

Our client is a large organisation seeking an accomplished senior leader to take overall responsibility for several of the construction related business functions.

This is first and foremost a business leadership and transformation role.  With full P&L accountability, the Head of Projects will take control of an operationally complex business, establish clear strategic direction and create a high-performance culture built around accountability, commercial discipline and consistent project delivery.

The successful candidate will lead the business through a period of significant performance improvement, strengthening its financial results, management capability and operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

• Assume full leadership and P&L responsibility
• Develop and execute a clear strategy to improve profitability, margins, cash performance and operational efficiency.
• Lead the Project Management Office and establish a high-performance project delivery culture.
• Implement consistent project management standards, systems, controls and governance across all projects.
• Oversee the assigned departments, with the respective Unit Heads reporting directly into the role.
• Strengthen commercial and operational control to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
• Establish clear KPIs, reporting structures, project-review processes, forecasting and risk-management disciplines.
• Lead, mentor and challenge senior managers, ensuring clear accountability for performance and delivery.
• Improve resource planning, procurement, cost control and management reporting.
• Identify any causes of underperformance and implement the strategic, organisational and operational changes required.
• Move the business from reactive firefighting towards disciplined, forward-looking management.
• Build a strong and capable leadership team that can deliver results consistently.
• Promote continuous improvement across project delivery, customer service and business operations.
• Create a performance-driven culture that delivers results through people.

Talent will demonstrate

• Genuine P&L responsibility for a meaningful and operationally complex business or division.
• A proven record of personally leading a turnaround or major performance-improvement programme.
• Measurable improvement in profitability, margins, cash flow, revenue or operational KPIs.
• The ability to assess operations and implement the right strategy, people, controls and processes.
• Experience leading, developing and holding experienced senior managers accountable.
• Strong commercial, strategic and operational judgement.
• A highly structured and execution-focused leadership style.
• Experience introducing KPIs, forecasting, project reviews, cost controls, risk-management processes and clear reporting structures.
• A sound understanding of project- or contract-based businesses, including programme, cost, procurement, resources, quality and client expectations.
• The presence and credibility to make difficult decisions and challenge established ways of working.
• The ability to create results through a capable management team rather than becoming the organisation’s principal problem-solver.
